Bassholmen is an idyllic little car-free island, near Uddevalla, Orust and Lysekil. Bassholmen is located in the middle of the beautiful Nordströmmarna, which is said to be one of the world's best waters to paddle in. The island is a nature reserve with both hiking trails and barbecue areas. Here there are several species of sea birds, and during the summer the cows graze freely along the beautiful beach beds. Bassholmen has a solid history from the herring period of the 1700's, where there were both a herring saltery and a trandigester on the island. During the second half of the 1800's, a boatyard gave its owner such wealth that he could build the stately manor house that we now use as a guesthouse. You can experience the history of Bassholmen at the museum and you can celebrate “Bassholmens Dag” the 14th of July.
